Habitat Conservation

About the Program

The Habitat Conservation Program is dedicated to preserving our natural habitats by implementing strategic activities to mitigate threats such as livestock and human encroachment, poaching, habitat degradation, human-lion conflicts, and wildfire outbreaks.

These efforts are crucial for maintaining biodiversity, protecting natural habitats, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of ecosystems.

Supporting Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs)

WASIMA collaborates with Honeyguide Foundation to support WMAs' sustainability by strengthening management and governance systems.

This includes developing management plans, establishing wildlife monitoring systems, supporting capital investments, enterprise development, and implementing human-wildlife conflict mitigation strategies.

“Our goal is to maximize conservation, enhance community participation, and deliver tangible benefits to local communities.”

Habitat Restoration & Governance

Habitat restoration involves tree planting, preservation of natural village forests, and strengthening village governments' capacity in natural resource management and governance.

These efforts aim to maximize access to ecosystem services and ensure sustainable use of natural resources within village lands.

“Our current focus is Uyumbu WMA, buffering Ugalla River National Park, Ugalla Game Reserve, and Wala Forest Reserve.”

Monitoring Wildlife Populations

WASIMA uses camera traps to monitor wildlife populations in community-based WMAs. These devices capture images and videos of animals in their natural habitats without human interference.

Camera trap data helps us understand species distribution, lion populations, and ecosystem health, ensuring conservation initiatives remain effective and adaptive.

“Camera traps provide real-time insights that guide data-driven decisions to protect biodiversity.”
