Team Member

Jonathan L. Kwiyega

Executive Director

Mr. Jonathan Kwiyega is a Co-founder and Executive Director of WAtu, Simba na MAzingira; People, Lions, and Environment(WASIMA). Mr. Kwiyega leads the organization's fundraising, communication, partnerships, and collaborations to ensure the organization's and team development and sustainability. He has a Master of Science degree from Sokoine University of Agriculture with over 10 years of field experience. With numerous conservation grants, Jonathan is a National Geographic Explorer and a member of the African Conservation Leaders Network. In 2025, Jonathan Kwiyega received the International Desert Conservation Summit Hero Award given by the Living Desert Zoo. Mr. Kwiyega is the life skills coach and books author, among which is the How to Glow Your Genius and Develop Your Talent.

Gilya Lino

Program Manager

Mr. Gilya Lino Mdili is the Program Manager at Watu, Simba na Mazingira (WASIMA). He earned an M.Sc. in Ecosystem Science and Management and a B.Sc. in Wildlife Management from Sokoine University of Agriculture. Gilya started with WASIMA in 2019 as a field officer intern and quickly grew into leadership roles. In 2020, he became Assistant Project Manager and helped set up operations in the Ugalla ecosystem for the “Stop Illegal Lion Killings” campaign, working closely with communities in Tabora to pass bylaws that reduce retaliatory lion killings. In 2022 he led WASIMA’s Human–Lion Coexistence work, focusing on mapping conflicts, monitoring incidents, and sharing practical mitigation measures to protect both people’s livelihoods and lion populations across Sikonge, Urambo, Kaliua (Tabora) and Mlele (Katavi). With seven years of hands- on experience in community engagement and conflict mitigation, Gilya now oversees WASIMA’s programs across the landscape, bringing practical leadership and a strong commitment to coexistence.

Lutufyo Mbotwa

Hman Resource Officer

Lutufyo Mbotwa is a Human Resource professional with 7 years of experience in HR roles. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management from Mzumbe University, Mbeya Campus College. Lutufyo is passionate about people development, organizational growth, and creating positive workplace cultures. Outside of his professional career, he enjoys singing, bringing creativity and energy into both his personal and professional life.

Errio Tom Errio

Finance Manager

Errio Tom Errio joined WASIMA in 2023 and serves as the Finance and Accounting Manager. He brings with him experience from working in various organizations, which has strengthened his practical understanding of financial management and organizational operations. Errio holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Economics from the Institute of Accountancy Arusha (IAA), and he is currently pursuing his CPA certification, demonstrating his commitment to continuous learning and professional growth in the accounting field. In his role at WASIMA, Errio is responsible for overseeing financial planning and reporting, managing budgets, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and maintaining accurate financial records. He also supports strategic decision-making by providing clear financial insights and helps ensure that organizational resources are used efficiently and transparently. Known for his professionalism, integrity, and attention to detail, Errio plays a key role in strengthening the organization’s financial systems. His dedication supports accountability and contributes to the long-term sustainability of WASIMA’s work.

Belinda Mligo

Human-Lion Conflict Mitigation Program Coordinator

Belinda Mligo is a conservationist and public health researcher from Tanzania, currently serving as the Human-Wildlife Conflict Mitigation and Habitat Conservation Program Coordinator at WASIMA (People, Lion and Environment). She holds a degree in Wildlife Management and a Master’s in Public Health and Food Safety from Sokoine University of Agriculture. Belinda works closely with communities in western Tanzania to reduce human-wildlife conflict, strengthen local conservation practices, and support the sustainable management of natural resources. Her experience spans program coordination, community engagement, and habitat restoration in areas bordering protected ecosystems. She has also contributed to several One Health research initiatives, with a focus on zoonotic diseases such as brucellosis. Her work has involved field-based training, data collection and analysis, and supporting research on disease awareness and reporting in pastoralist communities. Belinda is particularly interested in the intersection of wildlife conservation and public health, especially in understanding and addressing zoonotic disease risks. She is passionate about inclusive conservation approaches that value community participation and indigenous knowledge.

Happyness Jackson

Conservation Education and Outreach Program Coordinator

Ms. Happyness Jackson is a dedicated conservation practitioner and Conservation Education and Awareness Program Coordinator, leading impactful initiatives that strengthen community engagement, promote human–wildlife coexistence, and advance biodiversity conservation. She works closely with schools and communities to establish and support wildlife clubs, facilitate large-scale tree planting campaigns, and deliver capacity-building programs that empower teachers and youth with practical conservation knowledge and leadership skills. Ms. Jackson holds a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Management from Sokoine University of Agriculture and brings a strong blend of academic expertise and field experience to her work. She is deeply committed to promoting inclusive, community-driven conservation solutions that inspire environmental conservation and create lasting impact across Tanzania.

Mashaka Kijja

Field Officer

Mashaka Kija Rainh holds a Bachelor of Science in Education with Computer Science and serves as a Field Officer at WASIMA, driving community-led wildlife conservation in western Tanzania. He specializes in reducing human–lion conflict through innovative solutions like lion-proof bomas, community engagement, and citizen science initiatives. Passionate about building coexistence between people and wildlife, Mashaka transforms local attitudes, turning challenges into opportunities for sustainable conservation.

Abel Michael Charles

Field Officer

Abel Michael Charles is a dedicated conservationist and researcher with experience in wildlife management, research on ecological & climatic change, and community-based conservation. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Management from the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka. Currently serving as a Human–Lion/Wildlife Conflict Mitigation Field Officer at WASIMA, Abel works within the Ugalla–Katavi ecosystem, where he leads field verification and response to human–lion/wildlife conflict incidents. His work focuses on implementing community-based mitigation strategies, strengthening coexistence between people and lions and other wildlife, and supporting sustainable lion conservation initiatives. Abel has strong technical expertise in GIS and remote sensing, spatial data analysis, and the use of SMART systems for conservation monitoring. He is actively involved in data collection, analysis, and reporting to inform evidence-based conservation decisions. His experience also includes ecological research, land-use change analysis, socio-ecological field studies, and community engagement. Abel has contributed to international research collaborations, including studies on nature and human well-being in the Kilimanjaro landscape.

Paul Yohana

Field Officer

Paulo Yohana is a Field Officer at WASIMA, where he focuses on conservation education, awareness, and habitat restoration. Since 2024, he has dedicated his work to engaging young people in conservation, building on two years of experience as an advocate for environmental responsibility. A graduate of the University of Dodoma (UDOM) in Geographical and Environmental Management, Paulo leads wildlife clubs and restoration projects that bring communities closer to nature. His passion lies in empowering youth to become future conservation leaders while promoting harmony between people and wildlife

Abiud Raymond Mpasa

Communication Officer

Abiud Raymond Mpasa is a Communication Officer at WASIMA since 2023 and Founder of M‑Creativehub. With six years of experience in profile building, photography, video production, and website development, he blends technical expertise with creative storytelling to deliver impactful digital solutions. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from Moshi Co‑operative University and an online certificate in Business Management. Abiud is currently expanding his skills in database systems. Passionate about branding, perception, and conservation, he also enjoys writing poetry and creating online presentations that inspire and connect communities.

Elizabeth Mfumbilwa

Monitoring Evaluation and Learning Officer

Elizabeth Mfumbilwa is a conservation expert with a BSc in Environmental Science and Management, specializing in Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL). Her work focuses on advancing human–wildlife coexistence by designing and refining data collection systems, tools, and indicators that measure the real impact of conservation interventions. Elizabeth is deeply passionate about evidence‑based approaches that strengthen conservation programs and support adaptive management. By connecting field data with decision‑making, she ensures that strategies are not only effective but also responsive to the needs of local communities. Her broader vision is to contribute to conservation efforts that safeguard ecological integrity while supporting sustainable livelihoods. Through this balance, she strives to build a future of long‑term coexistence between people and wildlife.

Asha Masud Mohamed

Livelihood Officer

Asha Masud Mohamed is a committed environmental and natural resource conservation professional. She holds a bachelor's degree in Environmental Disaster Management from the University of Dodoma (UDOM). She currently serves as a Livelihood Officer at WASIMA, where she supports communities in building sustainable livelihoods that align with conservation goals. With experience in humanitarian response and economic recovery at Danish Refugee Council, Asha brings a strong passion for empowering vulnerable groups, particularly women and youth. She believes that environmental sustainability and community well-being go hand in hand and is proud to contribute to inclusive nature-positive development

Elinuru Isaya

Livelihood Officer

Elinuru Isaya is an Environmental Scientist holding a BSc. in Environmental Sciences and Management from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). He address environmental challenges using evidence based approaches and bridges scientific research, local-led initiatives and nature based solutions to promote environmental conservation and sustainable development. Currently serves as Alternative Livelihood Officer at WASIMA, addressing human-wildlife conflicts and habitats degradation problems to the communities along protected areas through alternative livelihood projects that are environmental friendly, reducing community dependency on natural resources as well as generating sustainable incomes.

Tree Nursery Attendant

John Kakusa is a secondary school graduate working as a Tree Nursery Attendant since 2021. His main responsibilities include managing tree nurseries and overseeing the distribution of seedlings. With dedication to environmental care, John is passionate about expanding his knowledge and skills to grow further in this field. He aspires to continue learning and broaden his expertise in forestry and community development.

Paskalia Bonifasi

Office Attendant

Paskalia Bonifasi is a Social Welfare and Community Development graduate from the University of Dodoma. She began her career in 2022 as an Office Attendant, where she developed strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Beyond her professional role, Paskalia is also a skilled cook, having earned a certificate in culinary arts from Msaginya College. She is passionate about community development and creativity, blending her academic knowledge with practical talents to inspire and support those around her.

Denis Onesmo Mng’ong’o

Governance Officer

Denis Onesmo Mng’ong’o is a Governance Officer at WASIMA, with a background in Wildlife Management from Sokoine University of Agriculture. He previously served as a Field Facilitator, where he gained experience in wildlife monitoring, environmental education, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation, working closely with local communities. Denis has contributed to conservation initiatives including elephant monitoring in the Wami Mbiki Wildlife Corridor and Kipunji conservation, focusing on promoting sustainable coexistence between communities and wildlife. With a strong interest in governance, community engagement, and conservation, he is committed to strengthening systems, transparency, and community-driven environmental solutions

Bahati Hilaly

Camp Mechanic and Driver

Bahati is a dedicated mechanic and professional driver with strong expertise in vehicle logistics and maintenance. He completed secondary education and advanced training at VETA, Mpanda VTC, earning a recognized certificate and high-level driver’s license. Since 2016, he has served as a Village Assistant, ensuring smooth field operations through reliable transport coordination and technical support. Outside of work, Bahati values family and enjoys football, reflecting his energetic and team-oriented character.

Kelvin Evod Lupamba

Camp Mechanic and Driver

He is a skilled logistics, mechanics, and driving proffessional who joined WASIMA in 2025. He holds a secondary education certificate and has completed proffessional driving training at VETA Mpanda Training College. Beyond his expertise in driving and mechanics, Kelvin has a keen iterest in home and environmental decoration, along with experience in short video production. He is also a talented Master of Ceremony, bringing creativity and energy to various events.

Editha Modest Onesmo joined WASIMA in 2020 as an Office Attendant. She holds a primary school education, which laid the foundation for her strong work ethic and practical skills. She is responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and safe office environment, as well as ensuring that office equipment and essential supplies are properly handled and kept in good condition. She carries out her duties with consistency, care, and close attention to detail. Editha is known for her reliability, dedication, and quiet commitment to excellence. Her efforts play a vital role in creating a comfortable and well-functioning workplace, supporting both staff and visitors. Through her work, she contributes meaningfully to the smooth day-to-day operations of WASIMA.

Dr. Baruani Mshale

Chairman

Dr. Mshale serves as the director of learning and strategy at Twaweza East Africa, leading research, learning, monitoring, and evaluation work. He holds a PhD in Natural Resources Policy and Planning from the University of Michigan and a Master's in Environmental Science from Yale University. Baruani is a staunch human rights and democracy activist with a passion for contributing to balancing rural development and environmental conservation goals in the tropics. Baru is an active mountaineer (10 times up Mt. Kilimanjaro), self-made chef, social runner, recreational table tennis player, and avid dancer.

Dr. Christian Kiffner

Board Member

Dr. Christian Kiffner is a conservation biologist based in Los Angeles. He first worked in western Tanzania for his Master’s research, estimating the abundance of lions and spotted hyenas in Katavi National Park, and has remained engaged in wildlife research projects in the region ever since. From 2011 to 2020, he led a long-term socio-ecological research program in northern Tanzania. Christian’s work focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of conservation efforts and developing approaches to improve coexistence between people and wildlife.

She is the Principal Partner of a law firm called Blackrose Attorneys. Ms. Kabagire has been involved in conservation matters through advice on contracts executed, but also has experience in commercial litigations, Banking, Corporate, Investment and Regulatory Law, Real Estate, and Conveyance Law. Ms. Kabagire is the Principal Partner at Blackrose Attorneys, with deep expertise in commercial litigation, banking, corporate and investment law, regulatory matters, and real estate. She’s also contributed to conservation efforts by advising on legal contracts that support sustainable development. Known for her clarity, professionalism, and grounded approach, Ms. Kabagire blends legal precision with a strong sense of purpose.

Dr. James Danoff-Burg

Board Member

Dr. James Danoff-Burg is an educator, conservation strategist, social science researcher, and biodiversity scientist focused on the human dimensions of conservation. For the past 25 years, he has helped document and then reduce the negative effects of human activities on biodiversity in 36 countries through community-based conservation interventions. Danoff-Burg is the Vice President of Conservation at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan, and M.A. and Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Kansas, and is a two-time Fulbright Specialist Honoree, advising the Applied Environmental Research Foundation in India and with the Southern African Wildlife College in South Africa.

Mr. Doyi Mazenzele

Board Member

Mr. Doyi Mazenzele has expertise in areas of natural resource management and climate adaptation and mitigation. Natural Resources Management, Strategic Management and Governance, Leadership and Rights, Resource Mobilization, fundraising, and Partnerships. He is currently a member of several national and global boards and committees. Mr. Mazenzele leads The Restoration Initiative: International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)/ Vice President’s Office as the Programme Manager. He is also the Country Portfolio Manager for the Global Environmental Facility (GEF)/Green Climate Fund (GCF) at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Dayi’s competencies include Strong Leadership, Effective Communication, Teamwork, Time Management, Resilience, and Multi-tasking.
