A blueprint for coexistence between people, lions, and the environment.
WASIMA is a grassroots NGO based in Western Tanzania, promoting community livelihoods, sustainable environmental practices, and lion conservation. We empower communities to be stewards of their environment while fostering coexistence with wildlife.
A healthy landscape for people and wildlife where humans, lions, and other wildlife coexist.
To promote community‑led approaches to lion and wildlife conservation in Western Tanzania.
We believe in community‑led conservation, working side by side with local communities to solve problems, make decisions, and create positive changes.
This plan tackles two critical challenges: Human‑wildlife conflicts and Habitat loss, ensuring resilient communities and secure ecosystems.
“Formed in 2011, WASIMA began as a campaign to stop traditional lion killings in Western Tanzania. Despite limited resources, we succeeded in halting illegal lion hunts. Today, our strategic plan builds on these successes, consolidating our focus on human‑lion conflict mitigation and habitat protection across the vast Katavi‑Rukwa‑Mahale‑Ugalla‑Kigosi ecosystem.”
