The Habitat Conservation

The Habitat Conservation Program is dedicated to preserving our natural habitats by implementing strategic activities to mitigate threats like livestock and human encroachment, poaching, habitat degradation, human-lion conflicts, and wildfire outbreaks. These efforts are crucial for maintaining biodiversity, protecting natural habitats, and ensuring the sustainability of ecosystems.

Support Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) sustainability

WASIMA collaborates with Honeyguide Foundation to support WMAs’ sustainability by strengthening Management and Governance, developing management plans, establishing wildlife monitoring systems, supporting capital expenditures and enterprise development, and human-wildlife conflict mitigation strategy.  The project aims to maximize Wildlife Conservation, Community Participation, and Benefits to the communities.

Our current primary focus is Uyumbu WMA buffering Ugalla River National Park, Ugalla Game Reserve, and Wala Forest Reserve.

Habitat Restoration

Habitat restoration involves tree planting, preservation of natural village forests, and empowering village governments’ capacity and competence in natural resource management and governance to maximize access to ecosystem services from within the village lands.

We empower village governments through Natural Resource Management and Governance appraisals, the process involves village stakeholders identifying and discussing the status of natural resources and threat drivers followed by the preparation of an action plan at the village level to guide the conservation of natural resources.

Monitoring Wildlife Population

We monitor wildlife populations in community-based Wildlife Management Areas to understand lions and other wildlife population status and ecosystem health. Monitoring wildlife populations ensures that our conservation initiatives are effective and adaptive; addressing the dynamic threats and needs facing wildlife and their habitats within the Village and Wildlife Management Areas.
