Program Introduction

WASIMA’s Human–Lion Conflict Mitigation program reduces tensions between people and lions in Western Tanzania. By combining community-led initiatives with practical tools, the program ensures livestock and families are safe while lions are protected from retaliatory killings. The approach integrates three key projects — Lion-Proof Bomas, Lion Conservation Ambassadors, and Loudspeaker Early Warning Stations — each working together to build trust, safety, and coexistence.

Lion-Proof Bomas

Lion-Proof Bomas

This project builds strong, environmentally friendly livestock enclosures that protect cattle and goats from lion and other carnivore attacks. The Lion-Proof Bomas use live wooden posts that can sprout again, ensuring construction does not harm the environment. Steel wire fencing makes the enclosure secure and resistant to predators, while livestock manure collected inside is used as fertilizer to enrich soils and improve crop yields.

By combining sustainability with predator-proof design, these bomas reduce human–lion conflict, safeguard livelihoods, and create a practical link between protecting communities and conserving wildlife.

Lion Conservation Ambassadors

Lion Conservation Ambassadors (LCAs)

This project trains and equips community members to act as conservation representatives in villages bordering protected areas. LCAs help install lion-proof bomas, monitor and map lion presence, record conflict incidents, and lead awareness campaigns. They also guide community efforts, recover lost livestock, and maintain WASIMA’s presence in 25 villages.

Having LCAs ensures trusted local leadership in conflict mitigation. They strengthen community confidence, provide timely information, and reduce the likelihood of retaliatory lion killings, making coexistence more achievable.

Early Warning Stations

Human–Wildlife Conflict Loudspeaker Early Warning Stations

This project installs loudspeaker systems in villages facing frequent challenges with lions. The stations broadcast alerts when lions are detected nearby, giving communities time to secure livestock and avoid dangerous encounters. They also serve as platforms for conservation education, spreading awareness about coexistence.

Beyond conservation, communities benefit by using the loudspeakers for free public announcements, reducing communication costs. These stations build a culture of preparedness and shared responsibility, strengthening both safety and conservation awareness.
